AFCAS Family Funday: Celebrating Unity Across Communities
On August 23, 2024, the Afro-Caribbean Society of Northern BC (AFCAS) hosted its first Family Funday at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, a joyful celebration of culture, connection, and togetherness.
Currently, Prince George is home to several Black communities that work hard to preserve their cultures and bring their people together. However, many Africans and Caribbeans from smaller or individual backgrounds often find themselves without a dedicated community, missing out on opportunities to network, share traditions, and form lasting bonds. AFCAS was created to bridge that gap by bringing people together, regardless of origin, to celebrate shared identity and create a home away from home.
In collaboration with the Ghanaian Association of Prince George and the Nigerian Community. Association of Northern BC, the event offered an afternoon of laughter, games, and cultural pride. Over 170 guests enjoyed traditional food, lively music, and fun activities such as friendly competitions and a bouncy castle for children. Representatives from Canadian and Indian community also joined in, sharing in the spirit of unity and friendship.
More than just a summer celebration, the Family Funday highlighted the growing strength of Prince George’s Black community and the importance of connection across cultures. The success of Family Funday marks the beginning of something special: a more connected, inclusive, and supportive Black community in Northern BC, and a reminder that when we come together, we build something greater; a stronger, more united future.
AFCAS extends heartfelt thanks to our partners, volunteers, and attendees for making this Family Funday an unforgettable success. Your warmth, energy, and participation continue to inspire our mission to celebrate culture and build bridges across communities in Northern BC.
